Baxter represents the heart and soul of Maine. After leaving office, Governor Percival Baxter used his personal fortune to purchase 200.000 acres of Maine wilderness, enveloping and including Mount Katahdin, the state’s highest peak—and donated it to the people of Maine for use as a park in perpetuity. This generous give has been augmented by the recent designation of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, The Big One is forever preserved as a wilderness for all to enjoy. Mount Katahdin, rendered here in the original Penobscot language, means something close to “The Big One” or “The Greatest One.”
